Indian screen legend Sridevi triumphs in a gentle, but affecting, story of a woman’s awakening self-respect.

Fans of Indian cinema need no introduction to Sridevi, the star of more than 200 movies: admired for her sparkling comic timing, dancing prowess and acting chops, “Sri” ruled the marquee from the mid-‘70s to the early ‘90s before settling down to raise two daughters with her husband, producer Boney Kapoor.

It took a very special project indeed to lure this very special talent back to the big screen, and English Vinglish is it.

Directed and written by Gauri Shinde, the film depicts the transformation of Shashi, a meek, put-upon Indian housewife who speaks only Hindi, into a confident citizen of the world, over the length of a four-week crash course in English.

The Eros release, which enjoyed acclaim (and according to reports, a standing ovation) at the Toronto International Film Festival, is up against strong competition from the satire Oh My God and India’s foreign language Oscar submission, Barfi!, but its universal message — conveyed with wit and heart — is persuasive enough to draw a sizable audience nevertheless. Indeed, a recent San Francisco Bay Area screening found the audience packed with families and young children, a heartening prospect given the film’s positive message encouraging diversity and tolerance.

STORY: India Chooses ‘Barfi!’ for Oscars Foreign-Language Entry

Shashi is a dedicated mother and gifted cook, the wife of a busy executive in the western Indian city of Pune. Her laddoos (a golden, sweet snack ball) earn raves and she even runs a small catering business, but her family treats her like a servant. Her teenaged daughter treats her with contempt, while the casually masked cruelty of her husband’s words (Adil Hussain) cut her to the core: “My wife was born to make laddoos!” he gloats.

When Shashi is called upon to fly to New York City — solo — to help her sister arrange a niece’s wedding, she is terrified (look for Amitabh Bachchan in a short, but memorable, scene onboard her flight). Once in New York, the Hindi-speaking Shashi is faced with ever-mounting humiliations, in a series of beautifully mounted, yet squirm-inducing scenes.

It is at this point that Shashi realizes that her lack of English skills is holding her back, and so when she spies an ad for an English class on a passing city bus, she decides to sneak out of her relatives’ house and navigate New York City’s subways and buses to get there.

Her fellow international students include a Pakistani cab driver, a South Indian engineer, a Mexican nanny and a smitten French man (Mehdi Nabbou), also a cook, who tastes her laddoos and tells her, “You are an artist.” Shashi retorts, “When a man cooks, it’s an art. When a woman cooks, it’s just her duty.”

It’s no surprise that by the end of the film, Shashi will conquer her fears, but the route Shinde takes to get her there is distinctively Shashi’s. The image of the newly confident Shashi striding down a Manhattan street, a takeout coffee in hand and a trench coat belted over her sari, will make you smile days after you leave the theater.

There is a growing body of work that shows Indian female characters flexing their muscles: Gurinder Chadha’s Bend It Like Beckham; Deepa Mehta’s Water; the late Jagmohan Mundhra’s Provoked: A True Story, starring Aishwarya Rai; and Amol Palekar’s Anaahat/Eternity, starring Sonali Bendre, spring to mind. And the work of Indian female filmmakers like Chadha, Mehta, Mira Nair and most recently Zoya Akhtar (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) is always worth a look.

With English Vinglish, female director Shinde — known for her documentaries and commercials — brings her own lifetime of experience into the picture. “It is my way of saying ‘Sorry’ and ‘Thank you’ to my mother, and a tribute to women,” Shinde writes in the film’s press notes.

Ultimately, what make English Vinglish memorable are the small, step-by-step choices Shashi makes to transforms herself. Yes, there’s grit there, but it’s tempered with compassion and dignity. The way the character has been crafted by Shinde, and interpreted by Sridevi, is gloriously feminine, and uniquely Indian.

The recent Avengers: Infinity War was the darkest MCU film by far but still managed to entertain fans with its jokes, easter eggs and references. While every scene in the movie was prominent to the storyline, it still had a few moments to spare to give a nod to its fans in India.

Initially, when the audience is first introduced to Doctor Strange and his companion Wong, the movie slightly gives a nod to Indians with a reference to the nation’s currency.

During a few dialogue exchanges between Doctor Strange and Wong in the New York Sanctum, Wong uses the word, ‘rupee’ revealing he has 200 rupee and not dollars. But that wasn’t the only reference in the movie.

There was another reference, possibly to the Hindu gods when Doctor Strange takes on Thanos on planet Titan.  The Master of the Mystic Arts proves he’s a worthy contender as the Mad Titan himself is forced to use two stones, the power stone and soul stone in the battle.

During their fight, Doctor Strange surprises Thanos by using his magical abilities and in an instance, the Sorcerer Supreme is shown with multiple hands. This is likely a reference to the Hindu goddess known as ‘Kali’.

While many may not have noticed, Doctor Strange is shown with 10 hands during the scene. Similarly, in the Hindu mythology, Kali takes a ten-armed form called Mahakali.

It is quite possible that the two moments were included to give a nod to the Indian audience. Fortunately, it seems to have successfully made its way into the movie without being cut by the Censor board in India unlike Black Panther ’s Hindu god easter egg.

Avengers: Infinity War is finally in theatres and its massive box office earnings look to break every record set forth by past MCU titles and other movies such as Avatar. Currently, India is listed among the top 10 internal market with an earning grossing above $18 million on the opening weekend. Fans can check it out in the tweet below.

Il film La maschera di ferro con Di Caprio è basato sul libro di Alexandre Dumas “Il visconte di Bragelonne”, a sua volta ispirato a una vicenda reale. Ecco la storia vera.

 

Nella storia di Francia a cavallo tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo c’è un mistero che ancora oggi non conosce una risposta certa.

Nel 1703, negli archivi della Bastiglia viene registrata la morte di un prigioniero noto come “Maschera di Ferro”, perché la sua identità era celata da una maschera (anche se non letteralmente di ferro, bensì di velluto nero con molle di ferro che la tenevano chiusa). Chi era l’uomo il cui volto doveva restare segreto?

La vicenda infiamma la curiosità e la fantasia non solo del popolo, ma anche di uomini di cultura come Voltaire e Alexandre Dumas, che intorno a essa costruisce la trama del capitolo conclusivo del Ciclo dei moschettieri, Il visconte di Bragelonne.

Il libro offre un’interpretazione romanzata dei fatti e ispira ben 6 adattamenti per il piccolo e il grande schermo, caratterizzati da diversi gradi di fedeltà. L’ultimo in ordine di tempo è il film del 1998 diretto da Randall Wallace con Leonardo DiCaprio, intitolato proprio La maschera di ferro.

Ma qual è la storia vera dietro alla finzione letteraria e cinematografica?

Il romanzo di Alexandre Dumas padre e il film con DiCaprio

Alexandre Dumas padre (1802-1870) si appassiona alla storia della misteriosa Maschera di Ferro dopo avere letto le ricerche condotte da Voltaire sulla vicenda.

Il filosofo e poliedrico artista francese ne scrive in una appendice al XXV capitolo della sua opera Le Siècle de Louis XIV (1751), sostenendo che l’uomo la cui identità viene tenuta gelosamente segreta è un fratellastro o un fratello, forse addirittura un gemello, di Luigi XIV ovvero il Re Sole. In base a questa teoria, la Maschera di Ferro sarebbe il frutto di una relazione adulterina tra la regina Anna d’Austria e un misterioso amante, sulla cui identità circolano molteplici ipotesi, anche che si tratti del cardinale Mazzarino, braccio destro e successore del cardinale Richelieu.

Dumas padre abbraccia la tesi di Voltaire e ne Il visconte di Bragelonne mette in scena il tentativo da parte del moschettiere Aramis di sostituire Luigi IV con il fratello gemello, rinchiuso alla Bastiglia con il volto coperto da una maschera sotto le mentite spoglie di Filippo Marchiali.

Il film del 1998 con Leonardo DiCaprio riprende l’impianto di base del romanzo, ma si concede molte libertà rispetto alla storia raccontata nel libro, che culminano nella rivelazione relativa alla paternità dei “gemelli reali” e in un epilogo molto diverso da quello immaginato da Dumas padre.

La vera storia della Maschera di Ferro

Ad accendere i riflettori sulla vicenda della Maschera di Ferro è Voltaire, quando viene imprigionato per breve tempo alla Bastiglia nel 1717, in seguito ad alcuni versi satirici contro il reggente di Francia Filippo D’Orléans e sua figlia, la Duchessa di Berry. Nel corso del soggiorno forzato, il filosofo viene a sapere da alcune guardie che qualche anno prima nel tristemente famoso carcere parigino viveva recluso un misterioso prigioniero.

L’uomo portava sul volto una maschera di velluto nero trattenuta da molle di ferro, che doveva indossare sempre quando era in presenza di qualcuno, e non poteva parlare con nessuno (fatta eccezione per il confessore, l’ufficiale comandante della guardia e il medico), ma godeva di un trattamento privilegiato. Gli veniva servito cibo di prima qualità e in abbondanza, vestiva abiti costosi, poteva tenere in cella libri e strumenti musicali e gli era concesso di fare brevi passeggiate nel cortile della fortezza.

Lo speciale regime di prigionia induce Voltaire a riflettere e il filosofo arriva alla conclusione che l’uomo non solo era qualcuno di importante e che probabilmente era a conoscenza di informazioni molto delicate, ma anche che non poteva essere ucciso per motivi politici o d’affetto e che il suo volto era noto (o almeno, poteva fare nascere dubbi o sospetti in chi lo vedeva).

Affascinato dal mistero, quando esce di prigione, Voltaire inizia a indagare e scopre che il prigioniero mascherato era arrivato alla Bastiglia nel 1698dalla fortezza di Fort Royal sull’Isola di Santa Margherita, dopo una breve sosta al Castello d’If. Per tutto il viaggio, l’uomo era stato scortato personalmente dal moschettiere Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, sottoposto di d’Artagnan e uomo di fiducia della Corona, oltre che governatore della Bastiglia proprio dal 1698.

Lo stesso Dauvergne de Saint-Mars aveva già portato l’uomo nel 1687 a Fort Royal dal Forte di Exilles, in Piemonte, dove lo aveva condotto nel 1681 dalla vicina Fortezza di Pinerolo, carcere in cui era stato recluso per 12 anni.

Il misterioso prigioniero era stato registrato alla Bastiglia come Filbert Gesnon. Ma dopo la morte improvvisa nell’autunno del 1703, era stato sepolto nel Cimitero di Saint-Paul-des-Champs a Parigi con il nome di Marchioly (o secondo altra grafia, de Marchiel).

Le ipotesi sull’identità della Maschera di Ferro

Le attenzioni e gli accorgimenti a dire poco speciali messi in atto nei confronti della Maschera di Ferro fanno pensare da sempre che il misterioso prigioniero fosse una personalità di rilievo dell’epoca. Ma chi? Le ipotesi non mancano.

Per alcuni, si tratterebbe di Luigi di Borbone, conte di Vermandois e figlio naturale di Luigi IV e della sua amante, Louise de la Vallière. Tuttavia, non è chiaro perché il giovane (che stando alla storiografia ufficiale è morto a 16 anni nel 1683, mentre combatteva nelle Fiandre) sarebbe stato imprigionato: per uno sgarbo al Delfino o perché scandalosamente sedotto da Filippo di Lorena (favorito del duca d’Orléans).

Un’altra teoria vorrebbe nei panni della Maschera di Ferro il padre naturale del Re Sole. Secondo questa ipotesi, il cardinale Mazzarino avrebbe organizzato degli incontri clandestini tra la regina Anna d’Austria e un rampollo con il sangue dei Borboni per ovviare alla mancanza di un discendente nella coppia reale. In tal caso, l’uomo potrebbe essere stato imprigionato per impedirgli di rivelare che il Re Sole era un “bastardo” e il suo volto nascosto per una evidente somiglianza con quello del figlio.

D’altra parte, l’ipotesi sostenuta da Voltaire e Dumas padre, secondo la quale il misterioso prigioniero sarebbe un fratello di Luigi XIV, rimane una delle più gettonate (più che per la veridicità, per il suo indubbio fascino). Tuttavia, a insidiarla ci sono due teorie che possono contare su qualche fatto storico in più.

In base a una, la Maschera di Ferro sarebbe l’ex ministro delle finanze di Luigi XIV, Nicolas Fouquet, arrestato nel 1661 con l’accusa di essersi appropriato indebitamente di ingenti entrate demaniali. Tale ipotesi è convincente nelle premesse, ma zoppica sulle conclusioni, perché Fouquet è morto nella Fortezza di Pinerolo nel 1680, dopo 16 anni di prigionia. Di conseguenza, è impossibile che sia stato condotto al Forte di Exilles nel 1681, come invece è accaduto alla Maschera di Ferro. Del resto, non si può escludere uno scambio di persona. Ma se era davvero Fouquet il prigioniero misterioso, perché coprirgli il volto? A parte il fatto che l’ex ministro era probabilmente noto a ben pochi francesi, nel carcere di Pinerolo è stato registrato con il suo vero nome.

Invece, secondo l’altra l’ipotesi, dietro la Maschera di Ferro si celerebbe il conte italiano Ercole Antonio Mattioli, ex ministro del duca di Mantova Carlo IV. A quanto pare, l’uomo era un informatore dei Savoia, ma anche del re di Francia e del re di Spagna, e sarebbe stato arrestato dai francesi per avere arrecato un grave danno alla Corona con i suoi intrighi. Imprigionato nella fortezza di Pinerolo nel 1679 con il falso nome di Lestang, nel 1694 è stato trasferito a Fort Royal (senza passare dal Forte di Exilles), dove è morto poco dopo. Ma in molti credono che il decesso sia stata una messa in scena e che Mattioli sia stato portato alla Bastiglia, facendo nascere il mito della Maschera di Ferro. L’uomo sarebbe stato tenuto in vita perché conosceva moltissimi segreti di stato… di più stati e la maschera sarebbe stata necessaria perché era stato arrestato illegalmente (cosa che spiegherebbe la registrazione a Pinerolo con una identità fittizia). Se qualcuno lo avesse riconosciuto in carcere, la cosa avrebbe creato ai francesi problemi con gli spagnoli, i Savoia e i Gonzaga, imparentati con gli Asburgo d’Austria. Inoltre, il nome sulla tomba della Maschera di Ferro, Marchioly, presenta una innegabile somiglianza con Mattioli.

 

Tra verità, finzione, fatti e supposizioni, l’identità della Maschera di Ferro sembra destinata a rimanere “incerta” ancora a lungo…

It seems Universal Pictures is on its way to rolling out another Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer soon. A new trailer has been found rated and listed on Consumer Protection BC. The listing suggests that the upcoming trailer will be 2 minutes and 30 seconds long.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which is the sequel to Colin Trevorrow’s 2015 blockbuster hit Jurassic World, will pick up several years after the last film on the Isla Nublar Island where an erupting volcano will threaten the dinosaur living on the island to the bridge of extinction. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard’s will return as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing to the island to evacuate dinosaurs in order to save them from the devastating volcano.

The last Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer, which was released in February, gave fans a glimpse of a new species of dinosaur which is neither a T-Rex nor a raptor. The new species of dinosaur shown in the trailer is rumored to be the Indoraptor, similar to Indominus Rex.

Jeff Goldblum will be reprising his role as Dr. Ian Malcom. The film also stars Ted Levine, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, Daniella Pineda, and Geraldine Chaplin. The Orphanage and A Monster Calls fame Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonia Bayona (J.A. Bayona) is directing  Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The movie has been co-written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly and it is being produced by Frank Marshall, Belén Atienza, and Pat Crowley.

While Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is still a couple of months away from its release, Steven Spielberg has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Colin Trevorrow, director of the 2015 reboot and co-writer of Fallen Kingdom, will return to direct the third and the final picture in the series. The film is set to release in 2021.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will debut in theaters on June 22, 2018.

Il diciassettenne indiano Piscine Molitor Patel, detto Pi, vive a Pondicherry con la sua famiglia che è proprietaria di uno zoo, e cresce studiando gli animali e le religioni. A causa di crescenti difficoltà economiche, il padre di Pi decide di trasferirsi con tutta la famiglia in Canada, dove potrà vendere gli animali dello zoo e cercare un nuovo lavoro, così l’intera famiglia si prepara a lasciare per sempre l’India. Durante il lungo viaggio verso l’America, una terribile tempesta fa affondare la nave mercantile giapponese su cui si erano imbarcati con tutti gli animali. Pi è l’unica persona sopravvissuta e riesce a salire su una lancia di salvataggio, su cui scopre di non essere solo: infatti, insieme a lui, trovano la salvezza una iena, un orango e una zebra. Ben presto però la iena aggredisce ed uccide la zebra e, dopo un’accesa lotta, uccide anche l’orango, unico ‘amico’ di Pi. Improvvisamente dalla coperta della piccola imbarcazione spunta fuori la tigre Richard Parker, che era anche lui riuscito a salire a bordo, e divora la iena, mentre Pi cerca rifugio su una piccola zattera legata alla scialuppa, dove tenta di mangiare e dormire.

Arrivato alla conclusione che non può rischiare di perdere la vita tutte le volte che cerca di prendere qualcosa dalle provviste rimaste sulla lancia a causa della tigre, Pi piano piano inizia a prendere confidenza con essa e cerca di ammaestrarla, o quantomeno di renderla mansueta. Riesce nello scopo dandole da mangiare dei pesci pescati e da bere raccogliendo acqua piovana, in modo da riuscire a guadagnarne la fiducia. Dopo avere affrontato un’altra tempesta, la piccola barca giunge sulla riva di un’isola abitata esclusivamente da suricati, che però nasconde un segreto: di notte, a causa di un misterioso processo chimico, ogni cosa diventa tossica (l’acqua diventa acida, uccidendo i pesci che nuotano nelle pozze di acqua dolce) e i suricati sono costretti a rifugiarsi sugli alberi, mentre la tigre si rifugia sulla scialuppa. Pi si accorge della pericolosità del luogo quando ritrova un dente umano all’interno di una pianta carnivora, evidentemente un resto di uno sfortunato predecessore del protagonista, capisce che non può rimanere sull’isola e, dopo aver fatto raccolta di provviste, riparte con la scialuppa e la tigre. Dopo 227 giorni di navigazione, arriva in Messico, dove le strade di Pi e Richard Parker si dividono: Pi viene soccorso da alcuni pescatori del posto, mentre Richard Parker scompare per sempre nella giungla, senza rivolgere neppure uno sguardo di commiato al ragazzo. Una volta portato in ospedale, Pi racconta la sua avventura a due poliziotti giapponesi inviati dalla compagnia assicuratrice che ha il compito di ricostruire il naufragio del mercantile. Increduli e insoddisfatti dal racconto del protagonista, chiedono di sapere la storia ‘vera’. Allora Pi dà loro un’altra versione: nel secondo racconto, al posto degli animali, ci sono persone dell’equipaggio della nave, in particolare il cuoco francese, la madre di Pi e un marinaio giapponese. Ma la versione, per quanto più credibile, è così cruda che anche i poliziotti preferiscono riportare la versione del ragazzo superstite con la tigre.

Vita di Pi, il cast

Ang Lee provinò più di tremila ragazzi per il ruolo di Pi. Alla fine nell’ottobre 2010 la scelta ricadde sullo studente diciassettenne Suraj Sharma, che sino ad allora non aveva recitato in nessun film. Per il ruolo di Yann Martel venne preso in considerazione Andrew Garfield, ma venne poi scelto Tobey Maguire, le cui scene, alla fine del film, vennero rigirate con Rafe Spall nella sua parte. Il regista nutriva de dubbi sulla troppa notorietà di Maguire, infatti Lee dichiarò: “Volevo essere coerente con le altre scelte di casting fatte per il film, e così ho deciso di avere un cast completamente internazionale. Ammiro tantissimo Tobey e spero di lavorare ancora con lui”. L’attore Tobey Maguire dichiarò la sua approvazione per la scelta del regista: “Supporto completamente la decisione di Ang di prendere una direzione completamente diversa per questo ruolo in Vita di Pi. Ang ha condiviso molte sue idee su questo film con me, e quello che ho visto è incredibilmente bello”.

 

Vita di Pi, curiosità

Pi sta sulla barca per 227 giorni. Una buona approssimazione per il numero pi è infatti 22/7 (la frazione).

Suraj Sharma non aveva alcuna intenzione di fare un’audizione per il film. E’ andato al casting per supportare il fratello (che gli aveva promesso un panino di Subway se lo avesse accompagnato) e ha finito per sopravanzare circa 3.000 aspiranti Pi senza nemmeno volerlo.

Vita di Pi, la recensione

Il film ha riscosso un enorme successo di pubblico e di critica, vincendo anche quattro premi Oscar (Miglior Regia, Miglior Colonna sonora, Migliori Effetti speciali, Miglior fotografia). Per MyMovies il film di Ang Lee merita 3,5 stelle su 5 e perfino il ‘severo’ IMDb lo promuove con 7,9 su 10; Tvzap concorda e gli attribuisce un 8 pieno.

Actor John Boyega who is going to reprise his role as Finn in Star Wars 9 has confirmed that his character will be paired together again with Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the upcoming movie for the final adventure of the trilogy. To recall, Rey and Finn’s friendship was established in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, the two of them were kept apart in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But, the dynamic is set to change in Star Wars Episode IX.

Boyega revealed at Washington D.C.’s annual Awesome Con that Finn and Rey will be seen sharing the screen space together in Episode 9. He said that he received a text message from co-star Ridley that stated that they will be back together in the upcoming movie.

“I haven’t read the script for Episode 9,” Boyega said. “But Daisy did shoot me a text saying, “Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together. That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again.”

This is good news for Star Wars fans who loved the chemistry between the two characters Rey and Finn in The Force Awakens. Considering Ridley’s message, it is confirmed that she has already gone through the Star Wars: Episode IX script. The upcoming Star Wars movie is expected to begin filming at the end of July.

In related news, some Star Wars fans had started an online petition pleading Disney and Lucasfilm to cast Academy Award winner Meryl Streep as the new Leia Organa in Star Wars: Episode IX. The character was previously played by late Carrie Fisher.

But, some reports claim that the filmmakers are not interested in replacing Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in Star Wars 9. It is reported that they will, in fact, write Leia out of Star Wars 9 completely. It remains to be seen whether or not the character of Leia Organa will be made to appear in the upcoming film.

Directed by J.J. Abrams,  Star Wars: Episode IX will premiere in theatres on December 20, 2019.

As Solo: A Star Wars Story nears its release director Ron Howard has decided to give some updates on the movie’s progress in the editing room. While everything remains on schedule, it seems like the post-production team is engaging in a final review.

The director is currently at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County and seems to be doing some final touch up work on Solo: A Star Wars Story. Howard first tweeted a photo from the sound editing room and revealed that the team was at the final sound mix stage.

The director put out another tweet from the VFX room doing a review of the film. Howard shared a photo from the film along with the tweet which can be found below.

Both tweets did initially leave some fans concerned that Solo: A Star Wars Story which is set to release in May is still going through post-production work. Howard responded to a fan who shared the same concern and assured that everything was on schedule.

“#May25. Edit is locked Score done. Right on schedule Hope you check #Solo out and find it fun,” Tweeted the director.

Howard also went on to assure that there will also be another trailer for the Star Wars spinoff movie. But it will likely be the final trailer since the movie is so close to its release.

Since the final sound mix would likely be done by then, Perhaps, there’s a possibility that fans may even get to hear the new Han Solo theme by John Williams. But nothing is confirmed as yet.

It seems producer/writer Dean Devlin of the popular Independence Day franchise has no plans of making a sequel to the 2016 released film Independence Day: Resurgence.

LRM caught up with Dean Devlin over the weekend while he was promoting his new horror thriller Bad Samaritan at WonderCon in Anaheim, California.  When Devlin was asked about the potential for another Independence Day film, he didn’t specifically state that there wouldn’t be a third film.

In fact, he tried to separate himself from the franchise, saying, “I don’t know. I don’t know. Currently, I personally have no plans on doing another one.”

Notably, the first Independence Day movie released back in 1996 was a worldwide hit at the global box office with a total collection of more than $817 million ($306 million domestically, $511 million overseas). The jaw-dropping action-blockbuster solidified Will Smith as a film star. The film was successful enough to call for the makers to go for a sequel.

Interestingly, it took around 20 years for the filmmakers to release the sequel film titled Independence Day: Resurgence. As the success of the first film doesn’t guarantee that the sequel will also turn out to be as successful, the same happened with Resurgence.

Although the sequel earned around $390M worldwide, almost double its budget of $165M, it wasn’t as well received by the audiences as the first film. The critics panned Independence Day: Resurgence heavily. The film it earned a rating of 30 percent on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. This likely influenced audiences’ lukewarm reception to the film. On top of it, Independence Day: Resurgence was also nominated for Worst Picture and Worst Director by the Razzies.

It may be the case that the failure of the Resurgence has restricted the makers from making a sequel to the 2016 film.  At this point of time, it remains a mystery if fans will ever get to see a new Independence Day franchise movie.

Marvel Studios and Disney are currently busy promoting Avengers: Infinity War. The fact that fans will get a glimpse of all their favorite Marvel superheroes on one single screen is enough to bring audiences to the movie theatres. But, the film studio wants to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the upcoming Avengers film breaks all box office records left and right.

Empire Magazine recently rolled out textless versions of six Avengers: Infinity Warcovers. The covers in question feature unique groups of characters from the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The textless Avengers: Infinity War posters provide some detailed looks at some of the superheroes’ costumes.

There’ also one big Thanos poster that shows the Mad Titan wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. Interestingly, the gauntlet has just two Infinity stones- the Power Stone and the Space Stone. In the movie and as revealed in the trailer, Thanos will be seen on a quest to acquire all the six Infinity Stones including the Soul Stone, the Space Stone, the Mind Stone, the Power Stone, the Reality Stone and the Time Stone that will grant him power over space, time and all reality.

Another poster that is interesting enough is the one which shows Captain America and Iron Man reunited. Fans are quite keen on knowing whether or not Captain America and Iron Man’s reunion is going to happen on the big screen. The poster shows the two fan-favorite superheroes alongside two strong female characters Black Widow and Shuri. You can check out the posters below.

The Joe and Anthony Russo directed film Avengers: Infinity War has already smashed ticket pre-sale records. The film is also expected to score the MCU’s highest opening weekend at the box office, with estimates of around $215 million.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in theatres on April 27th.
